The PRTC sent 24 wrestlers to the U23 World Team Trials in Lincoln, Nebraska
Over the weekend, the Pennsylvania RTC sent 24 wrestlers to the U23 World Team Trials in Lincoln, Neb. Nearly one third of them brought home hardware, as seven PRTC wrestlers reached the podium.
Leading the way was Michael O’Malley, who reached the U23 finals at 79 kg, before falling in two tight matches to three-time Nebraska All-American Michael Labriola. O’Malley, the 2020 UWW Junior Nationals champion, posted a 4-2 for the weekend. He competes collegiately for Drexel, where he is a two-time NCAA qualifier.
At 70 kg, the PRTC notched two U23 place winners with Anthony Artalona finishing fourth and Doug Zapf placing seventh. Artalona compiled an impressive 6-2 record with his only losses coming to eventual champion Jacori Teemer, a 2017 Cadet World bronze medalist and 2021 All-American for Arizona State and Brayton Lee, a 2019 Junior World Team member and 2021 All-American for Minnesota. In the consolation semifinals, Artalona downed 2019 Junior World Team member Yahya Thomas, a 2021 NCAA All-American for Northwestern, in a decisive 7-2 victory.
Zapf put together a 6-2 record, notching big wins over Ridge Lovett, a 2020 UWW Junior Nationals champion and two-time NCAA qualifier for Nebraska and Jonathan Millner, a 2021 All-American for Appalachian State.
Max Hale finished in fifth-place at 92 kg, logging a 5-2 record. He punched his ticket to the podium with a come-from-behind pin over Northwestern’s Jack Jessen in the quarterfinals.
The PRTC’s final men’s freestyle All-American came at 92 kg, where Cole Urbas went 3-4, earning an eighth-place finish.
Additionally, Jake Hendricks and Jeremy Ridge both claimed U23 All-American honors in Greco-Roman. Hendricks, the 2020 UWW Junior Nationals champion, finished fourth-place at 82 kg with a 3-2 record. Ridge went 1-3, which was good enough for an eighth-place finish.
